QSS-Sharks Dual Athlete

Athletes who are active members of QuickSilver and Silver Creek Valley Country Club members can continue to swim with QSS and Sharks concurrently. Athletes are encouraged to swim both teams during the summer as the Sharks offers the social events and fun, which keeps swimmers engaged and excited about the sport.  Sharks compliments QSS and adds to the experience.

Sharks athletes must participate in at least 3 dual meets and champs.  The end of season meet for Sharks is on Saturday, July 13.

QuickSilver athletes can participate in later events on Saturday meets and sign-up for Friday and Sunday events instead.  The end of season for most athletes is July 20- 21.  The key is balance.  Athletes can easily attend all of their cabana meets and add on a few Fridays and/or Sundays during the summer for long course meters.  USA Swimming meets from May- July are swum in 50 meter (Olympic size) pools.

FAQ

Can you participate in both Sharks and QSS?

Yes, you can participate in both programs concurrently.  About a third of QSS 14 & unders participate in a cabana team in San Jose.  We have QuickSilver athletes on every cabana team in the area!  Cabana provides fun and social events through the summer.

Can you attend Sharks practices?

Yes, athletes registered for Sharks and QSS can attend their age groups Sharks practices.  However, the QuickSilver practice is more set to their level after 9- 10 months of training, so depending on their goals, it would be more beneficial to continue QuickSilver practices through the summer.  If athletes would like to double up, then by all means, go for it!  We would encourage QSS athletes to attend Sharks practies on Fridays before the meets regardless.

Can Sharks athletes attend QSS practices?

No, Sharks athletes would have to be an active member of QuickSilver for that month and be a registered member of USA Swimming.  Athletes cannot drop into QSS practices as they are separated by age and skill level, plus USA Swimming insurance only covers athletes and coaches actively enrolled in the team.

Are the teams merging together this summer?

No, QSS and Sharks practices are separate.  Athletes may participate in both concurrently as many athletes do, but they are completely separate swim teams, governing bodies, insurance, budgets, etc.

What do the coaches recommend?

If you are able, then we'd recommend doing both programs as it will keep the training level up for the summer, but allow athletes to participate in all the fun cabana has to offer.  Athletes are encouraged to attend Sharks practices on Friday afternoons.  If your athlete is solely looking for the cabana atmosphere or wants to take a break from QSS, then that is ok.  If you're athlete wants to train for summer Junior Olympics and stay with QSS, then that's great too.  Each family should make a decision that is best for their athlete.

Is there a discount for QSS athletes since we aren't doing all of the Sharks practices?

Yes, QSS athletes receive $165 off for the Sharks season.  If you register in priority registration, then you pay $220 instead of the full $385.  If you wait and register during general registration, then you would pay $260 instead of $425.  Sharks Swim Team still has expenses to cover for the meets and regularly scheduled social events, so there is still a charge to join.

What is the swim benefit of doing both programs?

Cabana is racing!  The racing practice is harder to get in USA Swimming until the top levels.  The regular racing, especially at dual meets, is great training to race the person in the lane next to you and race for your team instead of just yourself.  If you ask our lead 10 & under coach what the key thing we need to have our 10 & unders do to get to the JO and Far Western level, he says "more racing!"

If my athlete is dropping from QSS, how and when do I drop?

Complete the drop form on the QuickSilver website by the 15th of the month prior that you would like to drop.
